About
Nanette A. McCarthy began practicing family law in 1995 and, in 2003, started Griffin & McCarthy, LLP, as one of two founding partners. Now known as GMR Family Law LLP, the firm is a twelve attorney boutique law firm practicing exclusively in the area of family law. Nanette obtained her Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago after obtaining her Bachelor's in Business Administration from Lawrence Technological University.
Nanette has in-depth experience with family law cases involving business valuations and complicated assets, high-level compensation, international and domestic removal of children from Illinois, parenting with special needs children, high-conflict disputes, and cases with mental health challenges. She has spoken at numerous engagements on the topic of matrimonial law, has published articles on family law topics, and has written many briefs for the Appellate Court of Illinois.
In addition to her regular practice, Nanette serves as the Board Chair of the Lilac Tree, a 30 year old not-for-profit organization which helps individuals navigate and overcome the challenges of separation and divorce by providing access to legal information, support networks and resources. Prior to that, Nanette served as president of the Illinois Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) which is an interdisciplinary and international association of professionals dedicated to improving the lives of children and families through the resolution of family conflict.
Nanette has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer in the area of family law by Law and Politics and the publishers of Chicago Magazine, is a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), a fellow of the worldwide association of practicing lawyers International Academy of Family Lawyer (IAFL), a fellow of Collaborative Divorce Illinois (CDI) and a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP). Nanette has also received training in negotiation at the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation and she has received intensive mediation training through Northwestern University. She has been appointed by the Cook County Circuit Court to act as a child's representative in custody and visitation proceedings. Nanette is a member of the American Bar Association and the Matrimonial Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association.
